Our General English course enables the development of English language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and knowledge. The course is designed to improve general proficiency to access higher level courses, English for everyday use, English for travel, English for work purposes or to do casual work in an English-speaking country.

Tuition Weeks: Full-time: 60 weeks

Program:Beginner

Learners entering this level will have a beginner level of English proficiency, determined by an English Placement Test covering the four core skill components – listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Exit IELTS score is 3.0 or above.

Program:Elementary

Learners entering this level will have an elementary level of English proficiencies, determined by an English Placement Test covering the four main skill components – listening, reading, writing, and speaking, or on successful completion of Baxter’s General English Beginner level or have a recognised IELTS 3.0 or above. Exit IELTS score is 3.5 or above.

Program: Pre-Intermediate

Learners entering this level will have a pre-intermediate level of English proficiencies, determined by an English Placement Test covering the four main skill components – listening, reading, writing, and speaking, or on successful completion of Baxter’s General English Elementary level or have a recognised IELTS level of 3.5 or above. Exit IELTS score is 4.0 or above.

Program: Intermediate

Learners entering this level will have an intermediate level of English proficiencies, determined by an English Placement Test covering the four main skill components – listening, reading, writing, and speaking or successful completion of Baxter’s General English Pre-intermediate level or have a recognised IELTS level of 4.0 or above. Exit IELTS score is 4.5 or above.

Program: Upper Intermediate

Learners entering this level will have an Upper intermediate level of English proficiencies, determined by an English Placement Test covering the four main skill components – listening, reading, writing, and speaking or successful completion of Baxter’s General English Intermediate level or have a recognised IELTS level of 4.5 or above. Exit IELTS score is 5.0 or above.

Program: Advanced

Learners entering this level will have an advanced level of English proficiencies, determined by an English Placement Test covering the four main skill components – listening, reading, writing, and speaking or successful completion of Baxter’s General English Upper- intermediate level or have a recognised IELTS level of 5.0 or above. Exit IELTS score is 5.5 or above.

All individuals interested in doing this course will undergo a PTR (Pre-training review) process to determine the suitability of the individuals’ preferred course or qualification as per the institute’s documented policies and procedures. This PTR process includes a PTQ (pre-training questionnaire), LLN (Language, Literacy, and Numeracy) assessment and PTI (pre-training interview). The PTR process helps determine if the course chosen by the individual learners would be the most suitable and appropriate for them by identifying their aspirations and interests, existing educational attainment and capabilities, competencies previously acquired Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) or credit transfer, experiences and aptitude as well as determining ACSF core skills level (literacy and numeracy skills), and digital capability.

Students who successfully complete the Intermediate level can gain direct entry into Baxter’s English for Academic Purposes program.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP1 & 2) focuses instructions on skills required to perform in English-speaking academic contexts across core subject areas generally encountered in vocational educational training in Australia. The EAP course is designed to enable the students to proceed to courses at Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma level. It aims to develop student awareness, knowledge and skills in the use of English as the language of teaching and learning in a vocational environment.

EAP teaches vocabulary, grammar and the four skills (Reading, Writing, Speaking – including pronunciation – and Listening)

Tuition Weeks: Full-time: 26 weeks
CRICOS Duration: 28 weeks incl. holidays
